Email Marketing Tip: Levels of Email Marketing Permission
Permission for email marketing is not a simple black or white issue. The type of permission that you require will vary, based primarily on three considerations:
  • the relevancy of the message to your recipient
  • the value of your message to the email recipient
  • the extent of the call to action 
Asking customers to receive a quarterly newsletter requires far less permission then asking them to receive daily promotions for various body part enlargement products!

The trick to permission based email marketing is finding the right balance. If you ask for too little information, customers may feel as though you’re about to fill up their inbox. Ask for too much, and your customers may just lose interest before they have completed the opt-in process; granting permission for email marketing should not require that much effort.

There are four levels of email marketing permission:
  • Opt-out email marketing assumes that the recipient’s permission is granted unless instructed otherwise.
  • Opt-in requires the recipient’s explicit and active permission. This means that the recipient has entered his or her email address for the sole and clearly stated purpose of subscribing to a list, and he or she has performed some additional action to confirm that he or she understands how that email will be used.
  • Confirmed Opt-in takes place when the recipient opts in and receives a follow up message confirming that permission has been obtained.
  • Double Opt-in requires two explicit actions on the part of the recipient granting permission: First, the recipient must formally opt in. Secondly, the recipient must actively and positively respond to a confirmation email.
